The Importance of Black History Month

Hello Members,

February is Black History Month. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs, and, adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history.  It is critical to recognize our past history in order to break down current barriers facing black and brown minorities today. We must continue to raise our voices to educate as we work towards a more equitable future.

The black community has disproportionately struggled to find an equitable and adequate amount of care, much of which has been re-highlighted throughout the COVID pandemic. Discriminatory practices that were regularly practiced in the early 1900s included the segregation of hospitals and medical organizations for medical professionals. Organizations such as the National Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) have led the way in changing the inadequacies of a healthcare system rooted in racism. CAHE recognizes the important work the black community has done and continues to provide equitable healthcare for all.

Our work at CAHE has been centralized around providing our members' opportunities to learn about building new ways of advocacy and partnering to put on events with NAHSE. This includes holding paneled events on how systematic racism and implicit bias impact society. In addition to partnering with NAHSE, our goal is to continue to hold such events as “Strategies to Implement Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Projects” happening on March 3rd. To register for the event, please visit the link below. In addition, if you would like to learn more about the impact of black history in healthcare visit the NASHE website below.

Sincerely,
